Is Your Foundation Trying to Tell You Something?
Your home's foundation is its most critical structural component. When problems develop, they rarely fix themselves — and the longer you wait, the more expensive repairs become. Here are five warning signs every homeowner should watch for.
1. Visible Cracks in Walls or Floors
Small hairline cracks in basement walls or floors are common and usually harmless. But horizontal cracks, stair-step cracks in brick or block, or cracks wider than 1/4 inch are serious indicators of foundation movement. Diagonal cracks running from window or door corners are also cause for concern. If you notice cracks that are growing or new cracks appearing, call a professional immediately.
2. Doors and Windows That Stick or Won't Close
When a foundation shifts, it throws the entire frame of your house out of square. If interior doors suddenly don't latch properly, exterior doors have gaps, or windows become difficult to open, foundation settling may be the culprit — not just humidity or an old house settling naturally.
3. Uneven or Sloping Floors
Place a marble or ball on your floor. If it rolls consistently in one direction, your floor may be sloping due to foundation settlement. While older homes often have minor unevenness, a noticeable slope that's developed recently or worsened over time points to a foundation problem that needs professional evaluation.
4. Water Intrusion in the Basement
Water stains, efflorescence (white mineral deposits), dampness, or active leaking in your basement often indicate foundation cracks that are allowing moisture through. In the Evansville area, our clay-heavy soil and seasonal rain patterns make proper drainage and foundation waterproofing essential. Persistent moisture problems accelerate foundation deterioration and create conditions for mold growth.
5. Gaps Between Walls and Ceiling or Floor
If you notice separation where walls meet the ceiling, where walls meet the floor, or where exterior walls pull away from the structure, your foundation may be moving. These gaps indicate significant structural movement and should be evaluated by a qualified contractor as soon as possible.
